Traveler’s Diary to the Bahamas during COVID-19

Tips on Traveling from the US to the Bahamas

Always check with your air carrier and the Bahamas Travel Visa website for any updates and/or changes to the travel requirements, both for travel to the Bahamas and travel back to your home destination. There is no implied warranty with this information, and it is solely to assist in navigating the process as it exists.

These guidelines were current as of February 1, 2021. For the most up to date requriements and the FAQs for travel to the Bahamas, visit: https://travel.gov.bs

  1. Obtain a Covid-19 RT-PCR LAB TEST (Rapid Tests are not allowed)
    • This must be done no more than 5 days prior to travel
    • You must receive a PDF Negative test result which you will upload to the Bahamas Travel Health Visa Website (see next step). Most providers can send results via email.
    • The results must have the travelers name, date of the test, and state a negative result.
    • You must get the travel visa completed prior to the date of travel so be sure that you can get the results of the test timely.
  2. Once the Covid-19 Test result is received, navigate to the following site:
    • Bahamas Travel Health Visa (https://travel.gov.bs/)
    • Review the “Pre-Departure & Arrival” and the “During Travel” sections of the site for the latest information.
    • Start the Health Visa Application by clicking on the “International” link if traveling from outside the Bahamas
    • You will need to create an account - click on the link to “Create an account”
    • Fill out the Passport Information page and you must upload a picture of your passport to the site.
    • Once your profile is set up, log in and you can click the button “Add Trip”
    • Fill out all the required fields regarding your trip. During this step, you will upload the PDF test result that you received from you COVID test. Click Submit.
  3. You should receive an email right away stating that your travel visa application is pending.
  4. Usually within a few hours, you will receive another email saying “Payment Required”
    • This indicates that your application has been processed
    • Log back into the Bahamas Travel Health Visa site and you should see an approved application and a button “Pay Now”.
    • Make the payment and you will receive an email with the payment receipt
    • Normally, within a few hours you will receive an email stating “Your Trip Application Has Been Processed”. In that email there will be a link to download the travel health visa
    • In the unlikely event that you do not receive the processed email within 24 hours, go back to the travel website and call the number referenced there. The representatives will push it through for you
  5. BE SURE to print the travel health visa (with the QR Code) as this is required both at the airport to board the plane and at Immigration

  6. Upon arrival in the Bahamas, you will receive an emailed daily health survey that must be completed for each visitor each day for the first 14 days of the visit.

  7. On the email with the approved visa, you will find links to Test Centers on the island that will be used to get a “rapid test”. This test is required if staying longer than 5 days in the Bahamas. Call the nearest test center (Palmetto Point) and make an appointment for the 5th day of your stay. The cost of the rapid test is included in the payment for the travel visa.

  8. The test at the clinic is easy, just show up at your scheduled time and remain in your vehicle. The test is performed in back of the clinic and you will drive through to get your test. Within a few hours, you will receive your test results via email. Even if your test result is negative, you will still need to complete the daily health survey.

  9. The US is now requiring a COVID-19 test for return visitors whether you are a citizen of the US or not. You will not be able to travel back without the test. The rapid test that is performed at the clinic is also valid for the return trip, providing that the test is performed within 3 days of travel back to the US. So, if your trip is 8 days or less, you can use the results of the 5-day rapid for your return trip as well. You will need to show proof of that test to board the plane so be sure to have it handy at check in. Electronic versions (the email) are acceptable.

  10. If your stay exceeds 8 days, then you will have to schedule another rapid test for the return to the US. Go ahead and schedule the return test at the same time that you schedule the 5-day test if you know that you will be staying more than 8 days. The cost of the second test is currently $35.00 and can be paid inside the clinic when you arrive for the second test.
